When we launched our 1st podcast together in 2015, i was a former newspaper reporter and a video clip producer with a lot of enthusiasm although not much experience in making audio tales. Since then, we’ve launched an entirely brand new podcast and learned some reasons for making a show that attracts audience and represents a point of view— and is enjoyable to produce.
We often describe our podcast being an unconventional business-advice show. In that nature, here’s some advice for making your personal podcast.
1 ) Know your audience— and what this wants from you
Apple Podcasts and podcasting apps tend to organize shows directly into categories: technology, comedy, business, information, pop culture, and so on. Those wide types are a start, but they shouldn’t always reflect the reasons listeners track into certain shows:
- Do they want to go on a good emotional journey?
- Perform they want direct, actionable advice?
- Do they want to be informed regarding current events?
Even within a single category, for example “business, ” shows can vary significantly in tone and style as well as the experience they provide. There are narrative displays, such as Gimlet Media’s “StartUp”; useful and niche shows, such as Dab Flynn’s “Smart Passive Income Podcast”; plus newsy ones, like NPR’s “Planet Money. ”
Figure out what type of sound experience your audience wants from you, and allow that guide how you structure your own show. We say “from a person, ” because although a large portion of your audience members might appreciate, say, comedy podcasts, they might not have to get looking for your display to be funny.
Figure out the intersection between strengths and what your listeners need, and then take it from there.
